IIS Officer Trainees

History of IIS

The Indian Information Service (IIS) came into being on 1st March, 1960. Formerly the Central Information Service, it was established as an organized service comprising Group ‘A’ and Group ‘B’ posts in various Media Units which come under the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting of the Government of India.

Prior to 1960, these posts were manned by officers recruited separately for each Media Unit by the UPSC from open market.  There was no direct recruitment to this service from 1974 to 1981. The rules of the Service were amended on 19.2.1987 and the service was renamed as Indian Information Service.

The Service is under the administrative control of the Ministry of I&B.
